  I enjoy savoring what I read and, therefore, I read slowly, identifying myself with the characters and the surroundings. On top of that, with this double-life ordeal, my time is quite limited these days.

  Having said that, will this be a 1-book-per-month book club? If so, count me out for the time being.

  When one hears the same thing day in and day out, you start to believe it; and one of the things that gets pounded at almost every meeting is the comment that the person "will not be happy, but rather sad and terribly conflicted" if one leaves Jehovah's Organization.

  Slowly but surely I'm proving that theory wrong, but it's really hard I tell you.

  What does property cost where you live?

  i just saw on tv that a 3 bedroom detached property with swimming pool in florida costs the exact same as my 2 bedroom apartment on the coast in england.

  i was totally suprised by this.

  as there are quite a few american posters here, i am curious as to housing costs in other areas.

  Here in Southwest Florida you can find a nice modern home, with enough land between you and the neighbor for about $80,000. However, the combination of high heat and humidity of the summer months is not for everybody.

  Pleasing Jehovah or Pleasing the Congregation??

  i was always annoyed with my ex for using the words "pleasing to jehovah" to describe certain actions.

  in actuality, he an his family (and i suspect others as well) seemed to be much more concerned with pleasing other witnesses or members of their congregations.

  as an outsider, it seemed to me that they were always looking for "loopholes" to get by with certain practices, as if they thought they could trick jehovah or that he wouldn't notice so long as they were not reproved or disfellowshipped.. my ex sister-in-law regularly spent the night with her boyfriend or he with her.

  I keep a 10 year rolling schedule with all of the org's publications. My husband hasn't even noticed all the old stuff I've thrown out in the garbage already!

  january 15, 1964 started watchtower women's new year off with a. bang: scream if you're raped or be disfellowshiped!!!.

  This is plain silly. In a moment of shock nobody knows how they'll react.

  The most updated info is that whether the victim screams or not, there will not be disciplinary action taken against the victim of any violent crime. Makes sense!

  Also, a letter was read not too long ago which stated that all types of crimes must be reported to authorities.

  So, they are making some progress in this regard, believe it or not.

  JW Family Birthdays

  i just got an email from my mom (who's a jw) telling me that my grandma (who's roman catholic) turned 77 yesterday, she said i should call because my grandma would be happy to hear from me.

  this might seem normal in a non-jw household, but it's the first time it's ever happened in ours, what struck me is that being raised a jw i'd never been told when my relatives birthday's were and conditioned not to ask.. it's been years since i left and i've never given it a second tought, but suddenly i feel pretty small for not knowing... my grandma, being catholic was the only one in my family who even acknowleded our birthdays, at one point when we were kids we weren't allowed to see our grandparents at all because they weren't jw's, it's insane.. to this day i still don't know when my mom and dad's birthdays are, i am not even 100% sure what years they were born in.. is this normal?.

  From this year (2004) and forward I'll make sure to acknowledge all of my immediate family's birthdays (parents, siblings and their offsprings).

  Just part of my self-imposed de-programing from the org.

  interestingly, i am not new to this board because i have been lurking here for over 2 years and enjoying the great wealth of spiritual food here.

  i feel so connected with many of the posters here because of my passive involvement with this board.
